Italian Romantic painter (19th century) – Lady and Musketeer.
Oil on canvas, in a thin wooden frame.
The scene is set within a round reserve on a dark ground. A musketeer in 17th-century costume, plumed hat, red doublet, high boots and sword at his side, holds the hand of a young woman in a red dress and blue skirt, seated before him in an emotional attitude. In the background, to the left, a table draped in scarlet cloth bears books and objects; to the right, an elderly woman is glimpsed tending to a stove. The composition is characteristic of Romantic historical genre painting widespread in Italy during the second half of the 19th century.
Condition report: Lined canvas. Good state of conservation of the pictorial surface, with signs of ageing and wear.
