The painting belongs to the Roman workshop tradition of Bamboccianti-style genre scenes, with a landscape informed by the “heroic” idiom associated with Salvator Rosa. The composition shows a seated shepherd at rest, staff and dog at his side, against a backdrop of twisted trees and ruined architecture, with a second figure loosely sketched in the middle ground. The brushwork is fluid and synthetic, with earthy browns and greens enlivened by a luminous sky with pink clouds.
Condition report: Relined canvas. Good overall condition of the painted surface, with slight varnish oxidation. Some losses to the frame rebate.
