The painting reproduces the celebrated Portrait of Bindo Altoviti by Raphael (Urbino 1483 – Rome 1520), preserved at the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
Bindo Altoviti, a wealthy Florentine banker and prominent Renaissance patron, is among the most celebrated subjects of Raphael’s Roman period, dateable to around 1515 and cited by Vasari in the Vite. The young man is depicted in three-quarter view, his head turned toward the viewer, with long blond hair, a black beret, and a dark cloak against a deep green background. The left hand raised to the shoulder completes the figure with ease. This is a nineteenth-century copy of good executive quality, faithfully reproducing the composition of the original with careful rendering of flesh tones and drapery.
Condition report: Good state of preservation of the pictorial surface, with traces of aging and wear.
