Description
Carved and pyrographed walnut chest. Netherlands, early 17th century.
A Dutch carved and pyrographed walnut cassone, datable to the early 17th century. The front is divided into panels arranged in two horizontal registers, separated by a central fascia, with the original iron lock at the centre. The panels are decorated in low relief and pyrography with figurative scenes: armoured figures, marine scenes with sailing ships and seahorses, fantastical architecture and grotesque motifs. The interior of the hinged lid is similarly decorated with mythological scenes and interlaced foliate borders. The iron key is original; the sides retain iron handles.
Condition report: Good overall state of conservation, with traces of old restorations and repairs.
