Lev Pavlovich Khodchenko was a Soviet painter trained in the academic tradition, working within the realist current that defined the Russian school of the twentieth century. His output ranges from landscape to still life, with a lively chromatic sensibility and a loose brushwork of Impressionist derivation. In this painting, dated 1963, the artist arranges several fish and a terracotta pot on a white surface, against a garden backdrop enlivened by touches of autumnal red. The thick impasto and vivid colour, built up through rapid strokes, reveal a confident command of the en plein air technique and a taste for direct light and warm colours.

Condition report: Original canvas. Good state of conservation of the pictorial surface.
