Description
European master (17th–18th century) – Portrait of a Nobleman.
Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame.
The painting depicts a mature man in three-quarter format, with flowing hair falling to his shoulders, a dark coat, and a broad white collar. The right hand, partially visible at the lower edge of the composition, holds a pair of gloves. The attire (dark coat and broad white collar) is characteristic of the bourgeois and professional European fashion of the second half of the 17th century. The dark neutral background focuses attention on the face, rendered with confident technique in the modulation of light, defining volumes with sobriety and precision. The quality of the draftsmanship and the psychological presence of the sitter point to the great European portraiture tradition of the Flemish or Dutch area, between the late 17th and early 18th century.
Condition report: Relined canvas. Good state of conservation of the painted surface, with signs of ageing and wear.
