Description

Italian painter (18th century) – Rural landscape with shepherds and flock.

Oil on canvas, in carved wood frame.

The painting depicts an animated pastoral scene with shepherds and a group of animals, cattle, sheep and a donkey, set in an open hilly landscape. At the centre of the composition a peasant woman, seated on a mule, converses with a young shepherd holding a staff; in the background a valley opens up, crossed by a waterway and closed by bluish mountains beneath a cloudy sky. The compositional layout and the rendering of the figures relate to the tradition of Italian pastoral genre painting of the 18th century, with echoes of Rosa da Tivoli in the treatment of the animals and landscape.

Condition report: Lined canvas. Good state of conservation of the pictorial surface, with signs of ageing and wear.
