Description
Italian painter (18th century) – Holy Family with the Infant Saint John.
Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame.
The composition depicts the Virgin seated with the Christ Child, accompanied by the young Saint John the Baptist holding the scroll inscribed Ecce Agnus Dei, and Saint Joseph in the background. The arrangement of the figures reflects the Italian figurative tradition of the 18th century, with softly modelled volumes and a palette dominated by deep blue, red, and pale flesh tones against a dark landscape ground. The gentleness of the gestures and the sweetness of the figures’ expressions are characteristic of the graceful, sentimental spirit of 18th-century devotional painting.
Condition report: Relined canvas. Good state of conservation of the painted surface; slight oxidation of the varnish, traces of old restorations and general wear.
