Description
Italian sculptor (19th-20th century) – Pair of marble pedestal sculptures depicting Poseidon and Amphitrite.
Carved entirely in yellow marble, in Baroque style. Slight chips and natural veining of the stone.
A pair of pedestal sculptures carved entirely in yellow marble, depicting Poseidon and Amphitrite. The two kneeling figures, resting on stylised dolphins above a scrolling wave-form base, raise their arms to support an upper shell-shaped platform. The male figure, with thick curling hair and beard, supports the platform with notable plastic vigour; the female figure, crowned, wears drapery covering her nudity. The work recalls the Baroque decorative repertoire of Italian fountains and gardens, here revived between the 19th and 20th centuries in a scenographic key. The natural veining of the yellow marble, crossed by reddish inclusions, accentuates the sculptural movement of the figures.
