Description
William Langton (British, late 19th century) – Lake at Sunset.
Oil on canvas, in a gilded wooden frame.
Signed lower left: «William Langton».
The painting depicts a lake landscape at sunset, with cattle watering in the foreground and a farmhouse set among trees and rocky outcrops lit by the last rays of the sun. The sky, rendered in shades ranging from orange to deep red, dominates the composition and is reflected on the calm surface of the water. The assured brushwork, with its careful attention to atmospheric effects, places the work firmly within the tradition of late 19th-century British landscape painting, following the Turnerian approach to the rendering of light in nature.
Condition report: Original canvas. Good state of conservation of the pictorial surface.
