Description
Arthur Trevor Haddon (London 1864 – Cambridge 1941) – Venice, Greengrocer on the Grand Canal.
Oil on canvas, part of a pair, in contemporary carved and gilt wood frames.
The work is signed lower right: «Trevor Haddon».
Arthur Trevor Haddon (London, 1864 – Cambridge, 1941) trained at the Slade School of Fine Art in London under Alphonse Legros, later perfecting his technique with Hubert von Herkomer between 1888 and 1890. A member of the Royal Society of British Artists, he travelled extensively across Spain, Italy, North Africa and the Middle East, developing a particular fondness for Venetian and Orientalist subjects.
The painting depicts a lively scene of everyday Venetian life along the Grand Canal: a greengrocer, his boat laden with fruit and vegetables, offers his wares to two women standing at a doorway, one of them absorbed in needlework. Set against time-worn façades and flower-filled balconies, the composition captures, through fluid brushwork and luminous colour, the picturesque atmosphere of the Venetian canals so dear to late Victorian taste.
Condition report: Original canvas. Good conservation condition of the pictorial surface.
