Autograph inscription on the reverse: «A Highland Family – H. R. Hall». Henry Robinson Hall was a Victorian and Edwardian painter, active primarily in the genre of Scottish Highland landscape with animals. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Artists, and the Royal Scottish Academy, and his works are held in several British public collections, including the National Collection, the Atkinson Art Gallery, and the Oldham Gallery. The painting depicts a group of sheep — a standing ram and two ewes at rest with a lamb — on a grassy hillside overlooking a Highland loch. The rocky peaks in the background, veiled in soft, diffuse light, are characteristic of the atmospheric quality typical of Victorian Scottish painting. The handling of the animals’ fleece, rendered with dense, textured brushwork, reflects the command of the animalist genre that defines Hall’s production.
